Partnering with a Steel Stamping Company
A leading tier one supplier to the auto industry selected Custom Rubber Corp. to manufacture a molded rubber sealing strip for a component used in the firewall. The customer and Custom Rubber Corp. worked together to determine the most cost effective way to put the molded rubber strip together with the stamped component; should the metal be bonded to the rubber during vulcanization, should the metal design be modified so that the rubber could encapsulate it without adhesive, or should the molded rubber strip be glued to the stamping as a secondary operation.
Ultimately, it was decided that Custom Rubber Corp. would perform the secondary operation of gluing the molded rubber strip to the stamped piece with a specially formulated adhesive. Once the part is assembled, the force of the mating parts keeps the rubber and stamping together - the adhesive only had to last through packaging, shipping, and assembly.
High Temperature Material
The material selected for the product had to provide a seal for the life of the vehicle, in an environment exposed to significant heat: the engine firewall. Together, the customer and Custom Rubber Corp. agreed on a peroxide-cured EPDM material that has excellent compression set characteristics and also works well in the temperature ranges required.
