In this process, a three-dimensional model is translated into a 3-D printing machine, which produced a foam-rubber like prototype in one step.
Advantages:
- The fastest option for prototyping because it's only one step
- The least expensive option for prototyping
- A good option to check fit and function if there is only compression force in the application
Disadvantages:
- The resulting prototype has poor physical properties compared to the cast urethane and the actual part; poor tensile and poor elongation
- A smaller range of hardness or durometer options is available
- The prototype will have a different surface finish compared to either the cast urethane or the actual rubber prototype; slightly rougher and a bit porous.
